Carbide inserts for lathes are commonly replaceable tungsten carbide inserts used in the machining of steel, cast iron, high temperature alloys and non-ferrous metals. Carbide inserts speed up processing and improve the quality of metal parts. Carbide inserts can withstand higher temperatures than HSS tools.

To increase the service life of carbide inserts, they are sometimes coated. Four such coatings are TiN (titanium nitride), TiC (titanium carbide), Ti(C)N (titanium carbide-nitride), and TiAlN (titanium-aluminum nitride). Most coatings generally increase the hardness and/or lubricity of the tool. The coating allows the cutting edge of the tool to pass cleanly through the material without causing the material to stick to it. The coating also helps to reduce the temperature associated with the cutting process and increase tool life. The coating is usually applied using thermal CVD and, in some cases, using a mechanical PVD method at lower temperatures.
